Our subsidiary, Maamba Collieries, is the largest coal mining concessionaire in Zambia, with a total estimated reserves of 190 million tonnes.
Since 2011, we have been supplying coal to the country’s industrial consumers and our power plant, and are exploring concession areas - about 7,700 hectares in Zambia’s southern province.
Our present coal mining at Maamba, Zambia, are spread over about 1,070 hectares of our 7,700 hectare concession area. Our reserves of coal comprise high grade and thermal grade fuel. High grade coal is sold to industries while consuming thermal grade coal for power generation.
We employ mechanised, scientific methods for mining, including modern heavy earth-moving equipment and a coal handling and processing plant to separate coal of different grades. These ensure worker safety, consistent quality and limit environmental impact.
Given that more than 50% of our operations are staffed by Zambian nationals, we also serve as a major source of employment in the southern district.
In 2013, we were awarded the Environmental Award by the Zambian Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) for our history of regulatory compliance and improvement in management standards. In 2016, we were awarded the Environmental Award for Overall Contribution to Sound Management in Industry by ZEMA. This is a measure of our long-term commitment to environmental safety and high management standards.
