Protection of environment in all operations of the Company is a core value at NBV. The Company takes meticulous care in the selection of equipment based on eco-friendly technologies, installation of high efficiency pollution control equipment, conservation of energy and natural resources, reducing, reusing and recycling of wastes, etc.

NBV strives to minimise air pollution by containing the concentration of suspended particulate matter and other parameters to limits below the emission norms prescribed by the pollution control authorities. It takes several measures for controlling dust emissions, dust extraction and dust suppression. Choice of clean technology and efficient operation of pollution control equipment form the core of these efforts.
Eco-friendly Technology: The power plants use fluidized bed combustion technology to ensure low emission of SOx and NOx. The ferro alloy plants employ low hood smelter technology for control of fugitive emissions.
Electro-static Precipitators: Very high efficiency electro-static precipitators with ample capacity are used to minimize concentration of suspended particulate matter in the flue gases emanating from the power plant boilers.
Filter Bag Houses: Each ferro alloy smelter is connected to a dedicated filter bag house which allows only clean gases containing suspended particulate matter far below the prescribed limits to escape into the atmosphere.
Dust Extraction System: To control dust emissions during handling of coal, dust extraction systems are provided at Coal Handling Plants of the power plant. The coal dust thus collected by the systems is reutilized in the boiler. A pulse jet bag filter dust extraction system is provided at Raw Material Screening House of the ferro alloy plant. To control dust emissions during packing of finished products at the ferro alloy plant, a dust extraction system with bag filter is installed in the packing area.
Dry Fog System: To control dust emissions during finished product processing and handling at the ferro alloy plant, a Dry Fog System which adds minimal moisture (less than 1%) to the product compared to more than 4% moisture in the conventional mist arrangement, is adopted.
Besides the above, rain guns are provided for dust suppression at various yards.
The key measures adopted for conservation of water and minimizing pollution comprise reducing consumption, recycling and reuse of water and effective effluent treatment.
Reducing Water Consumption: NBV uses dense phase, dry ash handling system at all its power plants to reduce specific consumption of water to just 2.6 litres / kWh of energy generated.
Zero Discharge: Collection of service water from ferro alloy plant and power plant and colony waste water in Water Recycling Ponds and reuse of water for slag granulation, ash conditioning, dust suppression and development of green belt in the plant and colony helps NBV maintain zero discharge.
Reduction in water intake: The cooling tower blow down and neutralized DM plant effluents are reclaimed through a Reverse Osmosis Plant and used back in process. This reduces fresh water intake.
Effluent Treatment: Effluents from the sugar plant are treated in a bio tower, clarifier and aerators and the resultant water is used for sugarcane cultivation. Effluent from the distillery is treated in a digester and sent to an evaporator where 50% of the effluent is evaporated. The balance is fully utilized for production of bio compost using filter cake from the sugar plant. The bio compost thus produced is used by farmers as manure.
All the solid wastes generated are recycled and used as raw materials for various uses.
The fly ash generated by NBV's power plants is utilized for manufacture of cement and bricks.
The slag produced in the manufacture of ferro alloys is granulated and utilized for production of fly ash bricks and cement concrete rings as partial replacement of sand.
The bed ash from the power plants is used for stowing underground coal mines and filling low lying areas.
The fume collected in filter bag houses is sintered and reused in ferro alloy smelters.
Apart from the above measures, development and maintenance of green belt beyond the statutory requirements is a regular practice at all the manufacturing facilities of the company.
