MCL is the largest coal mining company in Zambia. It has total estimated reserves of 140 million tonnes comprising high grade and thermal grade coal, spread over 1070 hectares  out of a total concession area of 7900 hectares at Maamba, in Sinazongwe district of Southern Province.

MCL was privatized by the Government  of Republic of Zambia (GRZ) in 2010, when  Nava Bharat (Singapore) Pte Limited, a subsidiary of Nava Bharat Ventures Limited, acquired a 65% equity stake in MCL. The balance 35%  is held by ZCCM-Investment Holdings Plc, an  investment  company of  GRZ.

Under the new Management, the Company has embarked on revival of coal mining operations and establishment of a 300MW coal fired power plant, involving a total capital outlay of US$ 750 Million.

MCL has revived coal mining operations with scientific mining methodology and modern heavy earth moving equipment. The Company established a state-of-the-art, Coal Handling and Processing Plant which has eliminated pollution of nearby streams.

MCL has achieved significant improvement in the management of coal dumps, mitigating air pollution caused by the erstwhile spontaneous combustion in the over burden dumps.

In recognition of these achievements, MCL bagged the prestigious " Environmental Award 2012 ” from Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA).

To meet the growing demand for power, MCL is setting up  a mine-mouth, 300MW ( 2 x 150MW ) Coal Fired Power Plant, which will utilize the thermal grade coal from the coal mine as fuel.

The Power Plant will employ Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (CFBC) technology which is well known for environment friendly operation.

MCL has appointed SEPCO Electric Power Construction Corp., China, one of the largest EPC Contractors for power plants, substations and transmission lines, for implementation of this power project.

The project is expected to lead to significant social and economic development in the Southern Province of Zambia.

Social Management and Community Services

MCL believes in an inclusive programme for discharging Corporate Social Responsibility which is the core of all developmental activities.  For this purpose, the Company constituted the Maamba Development Trust (MDT) which will initially take care of all the non-core mining activities.  Eventually, it will take up community development works in and around Maamba with particular emphasis on health, education and sports, aside from other livelihood development activities.

The Company has focused its efforts on protected  water supply, storm water drainage and sanitation system in and around Maamba. MCL will inculcate safety culture, principally among the personnel involved in active mining and coal processing operations.
